Holiday Buys

22 Dec

I visited Canada in September and these are some of the beauty purchases I made. These are not available in the UK, so I thought I would try them out.

IMAG0602

I bought these eyeliners from Sephora, a pack of four mini liners. From top to bottom: Midnight black, Kaki Green, Psychedelic Purple and Nuage. I have been using these liners for a while now and I think they are quite good! They are soft and easy to apply and the pigmentation is just fab!

I also got the above face brush from Sephora. It’s got really soft but firm bristles and is quite a good exfoliating and cleansing tool, and a way cheaper alternative to the ever popular Clarisonic. I use this with my facial wash/cleanser.

I love tinted lip balms, and I had read a couple of good reviews about the Maybelline balms so I decided to try a couple .The top  one called Grape Vine gives a bit of a purple tint, whilst the bottom, Pink Punch gives your lips a nice pink tint. They are lovely to use and very moisturising on the lips. Wonder why these are not available in the UK.

The above products are also in the tinted lip balm category. They are covergirl lipslicks in Hipster above and Daring below. Like the Maybelling balms, they also give your lips a hint of a tint and are very moisturiing.

IMAG0585

I thought I would try one of the wet and wild eyeshadows as reviews of these have been positive. The above is a trio of nice neutrals called Knock on wood. These are very pigmented and easy to apply as they blend well.

The above products were purchased from Bath and Body Works. From left to right: Paris Amour body lotion and fragrance mist and White Citrus  fragrance mist. Paris Amour has a lovely floral fragrance whilst White Citrus has a sharp citrus fragrance.

My Current Favourite and E.L.F

22 Mar

The new Avon Shine Attract Lipstick (pictures above) is a current favourite. This is a  lipstick and lip balm in one. The lipstick has an outer gel layer which moisturises your lips and gives it shine , whilst the inner core adds full colour to your lips. I like the feel of this lipstick as it applies smoothly. You can wear this sheer or apply more for full colour. I have been wearing P201 Plumberry pictured above and swatched below. It’s priced £8.50, but it is currenty on special offer for £5.00 and can be purchased from the Avon website here.

I recently got these items from ELF:

Moisturising lip tint spf 8 Berry £3.50 – This is a dark pink/fuchsia tinted lip balm. Has a sweet sugary taste.

Clarifying pressed powder £1.50 – I love this pressed powder! It gives good coverage and does a good job keeping away the shine.

Eyebrow Kit dark £3.50 – Great for filling in sparse eyebrows.

Studio Glossy Gloss in Funky Fuchsia £3.50 – This gloss gives your lips high shine and colour, and is non-sticky.

Tone Correcting Concealer £1.50 – This is a liquid concealer, which is great for under the eyes and concealing blemishes.

Pro Mini Eyeshadow Palette cool (above) £3.75 – This palette contains 32 eye shadows, some of which are matte, whilst others are shimmery. These eye shadows are pigmented and apply smoothly to your eye lids.

E.L.F products can be purchased here.

Fashionista Makeup

18 Nov

I came across the new Fashionista make-up range in superdrug some days ago and I couldn’t resist buying a couple of the products to try out. I must say I am very impressed with the products I bought so far. I got a blusher called Crimson, which is a sparkly pink colour that is very pigmented. You need to use just a tiny amount at a time. I also got an eyeliner, in Shade 2 Claudia. This is a highly pigmented sparkly black liner which is long lasting. I bought two eyeshadows, Foxy, which is a soft metallic/pearly bronze colour and Embellished, which is a satin purple/violet shade. These are very pimented blendable eye shadows. The products I bought cost £4 each. The range also includes lipsticks, mascaras, foundation, lip glosses and nail polish, all at affordable prices.

Kiko Makeup Milano Cosmetics

7 Nov

I visited the new Westfield Shopping Center in Stratford some days ago, and there I discovered the kiko make-up store. Kiko is an Italian brand and they have a wide range of make-up,  lipglosses, eyeshadows, lipsticks, nail polishes etc. in a wide variety of shades. The products are quite reasonably priced as well. I bought a few products which I have been trying out and I can honestly say they are really good. The lipglazes and lipgloss are £3 each and they are very moisturising, shiny and non-sticky. I also got an eyeshadow in a neutral shade, which is very pigmented, blends really well and stays put for hours without creasing, and I did not use any primer. The single eye shadows are £5.90 each. I bought a matt lipstick in a brown neutral shade, which, although matt feels very comfortable to wear and is not dry at all. These are £5.90 each. I got a nail polish £4.90 also in a neutral shade, which I have yet to try. I will tell you what I think about it sometime soon.
If you’ve not already done so, I think it’s a brand worth checking out. Really helpful and friendly sales assistants.

Collection 2000 Metallic Cream Eye Shadow

18 Oct

I tried a bronzy colour called Copper Pot, which looked lovely in the container, so I thought it would do the same on my eye lids. Firstly, the product is not very pigmented you need to deposit a lot of the product on your lids to see visible results. The product comes with a sponged tip applicator which is fairly easy to use. The shadow does blend well and I think its perfect for creating a natural makeup look. It could also work as a base for a powder eye shadow of the same colour.

Is expensive make-up better than reasonably priced make-up?

28 Sep

I prefer using the term ‘reasonably priced’. I don’t like using the phrase ‘cheap make-up’ as it brings up the idea that the product is tacky, inferior, breakout inducing make-up. These exist of course, but that’s another story.

Has anyone ever commented on the makeup you’re wearing by saying ‘I love that pink MAC lipstick you’ve got on’ or ‘that ELF eye shadow really does suit you’? (If you can spot a brand like that, you’ve got a very rare talent indeed)
My point is whatever brand of make up you choose to wear, weather expensive or reasonably priced, the end results depend on weather you have chosen appropriate colours or formulation for your skin tone and type and your application technique.
You might say expensive brands have been well researched etc etc. But nowadays you could find high street or drugstore products which contain high tech ingredients; and which perform just as well as high end products if not even better. Did you know that  Lancôme is owned by L’Oreal? Nuff said.

Reasonably priced products which work for me :

GREAT TINTED LIP GLOSS

I am a big lip gloss fan so when I saw Hawaiian Tropic’s sunkissed moisturizing lip gloss, I had to give it a try. I choose island berry, a lovely tinted berry shade, which gives your lips a very subtle berry colour. It smells great, tastes sweet, and is not at all sticky. Thumbs up!

Pluses – great colour, great taste, moisturizing, non-sticky.

Minuses – You might need to re-apply often.

FABULOUS AFFORDABLE EYESHADOWS
This MUA professional eyeshadow palette in Heaven and Earth £4 (pictured above) contains  great, pigmented nude shades, which blend really well and can be used to create great natural make-up looks.
